Woodside Primary School

As soon as I walked into my first maths lesson on my PGCE course (more than 20 years ago now!) my eyes were opened to a more exciting way to teach maths and wanted to instil a love of learning in others.  I think it is funny how my least favourite subject at school has become the one I most love to teach due to its variety and practical application.  Perhaps my own frustrations as a child has given me the insight into the anxiety children, teachers and TAs feel when presented with mathematical problems, making me reconsider how I teach, present and support them all in their learning and progression through the mastery approach.  I love the creativity that maths brings, seeing children make links between different areas and watching their confidence grow as they master new (and old) skills.  Throughout my career, I have taught all the primary age groups and have mentored many students – all with the aim of promoting a love of maths. A few years ago I sat in our Year 6 leaver’s service and heard one young man tell the audience his favourite memory of Woodside Primary was a maths investigation lesson I taught him in Year 2!  If maths has trumped PGL, trips and the plays throughout his school life, we must all be doing something right.
