Belmont School
I am a secondary maths trained teacher with experience in mainstream schools before transitioning to the special school sector. My passion for maths runs deep because I believe that learning and teaching maths can be fun, engaging and accessible for all. I am particularly inspired by the principles of Mastery Maths, which uphold the belief that every pupil can be the best they can be with mathematical learning, no matter where they are on their academic journey.
Working with pupils with additional needs has expanded my understanding of how diverse the learning process can be. It is imperative to tailor my teaching approach to accommodate each pupil's unique learning pace and style. I enjoy finding creative ways to break down complex concepts and using manipulatives to support pupils’ understanding. Witnessing pupils grow in confidence and successfully grasp ideas they once found challenging is incredibly rewarding.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to work closely with many colleagues across special schools, through GLOW Maths Hub, Boolean Maths Hub and SWALLS. As a lead in Maths Network meetings, I have been able to share my passion for maths while continuously learning from others and contributing my knowledge in return. This collaborative approach not only keeps me connected with the latest teaching practices but also fosters an environment where we can share ideas and strategies to strengthen and enrich our collective efforts in maths education.
