What is #YesUCan?
#YesUCan
Supporting schools to develop positive mathematical mindsets of
children, students, teachers, leaders and parents.
A #YesUCan Growth Mindset is the belief that you can consistently develop your talents and abilities. This stands in contrast to a fixed mindset, which is the belief that your talents and abilities are carved in stone and cannot be further cultivated.
Research has repeatedly shown that a growth mindset fosters greater motivation and achievement in students. However, a #YesUCan Growth Mindset does not promise that your ability will develop, let alone develop to a high level, regardless of what you do.
Nor is there any evidence that simply saying, “Everyone/You can do anything,” teaches students a growth mindset.
We believe all pupils are capable of improving their understanding of mathematics. Pupils are neither ‘born with the maths gene’ nor ‘just no good at maths’. With good teaching, appropriate resources, effort and a positive mindset all pupils can enjoy and improve their achievement in mathematics.
The four #YesUCan Pillars are:
1. Do not accept anyone saying 'It's OK I was never good at maths', 'Don't worry I was never good at Maths' , ' I don't like Maths', or equivalent.
2. Stress to every pupil that they can learn and be successful in mathematics.
3. Making mistakes is a valuable and necessary part of learning.
4. Success comes from hard work and trying different approaches.
